Tom Brand is a Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, European Trade Mark Attorney, and Registered Trade Mark Agent, and is a partner of W.P. Thompson & Co, a European prosecution firm specializing in the protection of intellectual property. Expertise within the firm includes patents, trademarks, designs, and copyrights and covers an extensive range of technologies from electronic engineering and mechanical sciences to chemistry and biotechnology. W.P. Thompson & Co was established in 1873 and has grown to four offices, three in England and one in Germany, to better serve its substantial client base, both in the United Kingdom and around the world. Tom earned his B.Sc. (Honors) and PhD degrees in Chemistry from the University of Manchester. He is a Chartered Chemist and has a legal master's degree in intellectual property litigation from the Nottingham Law School. After finishing his PhD, Tom entered the patents profession, joining W.P. Thompson & Co's London office. After completing his training with the firm, Tom gained further experience working for another private practice in the trademarks field and as corporate patent counsel for Unilever plc, experience that gave him valuable insight into the strategic considerations of large corporations in connection with intellectual property and further experience with the European Patent Office and other patent offices worldwide. Tom's practice now encompasses a wide range of clients from around the world and from many different technology areas. He also maintains a strong interest in trademarks and a substantial trademark practice, and is a contributor to The Trade Mark Handbook (Sweet & Maxwell) and is a tutor for the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys in the United Kingdom.
